รายละเอียด :

Eri silk (Eri silk, Philosamia ricini) is a silkmoth in the order Lepidoptera of the family Saturniidae.

It is a polyvoltine silkworm that has a life cycle of 45-60 days, spanning from eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and butterflies. Eri silkworm is the only wild silkworm that can be fully domesticated throughout its life cycle. Which has advantages over mulberry silk (Mulberry silk, Bombyx mori), as the mulberry silk must only feed from the mulberry leaves, while Eri silk can feed well on cassava leaves. That means the cassava farmers can raise Eri silk concurrently without having to plant additional crops to feed the silkworm. A healthy Eri moth can lay an average of about 300 eggs.

Eri silk can be raised all year round, about 4-5 generations per year. Its cocoon is in white with an elongated shape. The fibers are weaved more loosely than the mulberry silks cocoon. One end of the cocoon has a small opening to make way for the moth to come out of its nest. Therefore, the silk can be taken for spinning and weaving. without boiling the cocoon and killing the silkworm. The Eri silk pupae can be used as food for people and animals, with a higher proportion of protein than other meats. The farmers can choose to let the pupae grow into butterflies to reproduce the next generation. As the quality in nutrition of the produce is high compared to the usage of resources and also emits less greenhouse gasses. Therefore, Eri silk farming can be considered as one of the most sustainable circular economy industries.

Kokoonic[CP1] originated from Kongkiat Textile Co., Ltd.–the family business of the textile industry, one of the leaders in the production and development of natural yarns in Thailand. When Khun Praewprai Kongkiatkrai, Design and Development manager of Kongkiat Textile Co., Ltd. started the research and development of new textile materials in response to the global Ethical Textile market, she saw the potential of Eri silk, which, unlike the conventional mulberry silkworm, farmers can harvest fibers without killing the pupae, also, the pupae which consist 90% of the whole cocoon can as well be manufactured as more valued protein products instead of being discarded. And besides being a kind of silk that is easier to maintain than silk from mulberry silk, Eri silkworms also feed on cassava leaves, which is a waste from cassava farming. Farmers can raise silkworms along with farming cassava all year round, making Eri silk a resource-efficient and highly rewarding fiber production. After numerous feasibility studies, The Kokoonic Co., Ltd. was established on 13th November 2018 to realize the concept of making Eri silk the new sustainable economic livestock.

In addition to the silk of unique quality and environmentally friendly production. Eri silk pupae also have a very high protein content compared to other meats. The production of alternative proteins from Eri silk pupae is another industry in response to future global food security trends. The Eri silkworms are sensitive to chemicals. The farming process must be in a chemical-free state from start to finish. Moreover, the Eri silk will detox itself before progressing to the cocoon stage, therefore, the protein obtained from Eri silk is a distinctive ingredient that can be used to produce truly clean and safe food and cosmetics.

Kookonic brands name derived from the word cocoonof the silk pupae, the word organicfor its chemicals-free process, and the letter K from Kongkiatkrai, the founder familys name. Today, Kokoonic continues to be an innovator that strives to deliver value and benefits to everyone with products from Eri silk. Being both the food producer for the next era and the leader to a bright future’–all with true sustainability for citizens of the world.

Kokoonic is the pioneer of Eri silk pupae products in Thailand. Eri silk pupae are considered as a high protein food with 63-66.8% protein, 9 essential amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Kokoonics Eri silk protein powder can be used as an ingredient in all types of food. It is also considered a clean, chemical-free protein. Because Eri silk is sensitive to chemicals and must be raised in chemical-free conditions only. All These facts are making the unique insect like Eri silk a quality clean protein source as an alternative to other livestock, the traditional source of protein that may not be sufficient for the world’s population in the future.

In addition to the pupae protein powder, Kookonic also extracts another protein from the cocoon called Sericin, the glue-like protein that holds the silk fibers, which is beneficial to be used as an innovative ingredient in beauty products. Sericin has outstanding properties, including proliferation of skin cells, collagen regeneration, wrinkles reduction, antioxidants, moisturizer and wound healing. Therefore , the manufacturers will have endless possibilities to create a wide range of beauty and pharmaceutical products. Furthermore, Kokoonic is in the stage of researching and developing Sericin to be edible, so the food and drinks industry will also benefit from the remarkable properties of Sericin.

More importantly, all the Kokoonics products always come with great responsibility to the world, they are promised to be manufactured with the efficient use of resources, generating less waste and emitting less greenhouse gasses. And most of all, to sustainably share economic values, knowledge and quality of life to farmers & communities.
